BALTIMORE (AP) Wayne Martin had 27 points and 21 rebounds in his Division I debut, and Tennessee State took control late in a back-and-forth game to beat Loyola (MD) 86-71 in the season opener for both teams on Friday.

Martin, a redshirt junior transfer from Navarro College (TX), came off the bench and immediately made his presence known, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the final 14:05 of the first half. He finished 10 of 15, including 7 for 7 on free throws. Tahjere McCall had 23 points and committed seven turnovers.

Tennessee State broke the game open late after a tight contest most of the way. Martin's layup with just under six minutes left broke a 65-all tie, and the Greyhounds were forced to foul late.

Tyler Hubbard led Loyola with 21 points. Eric Laster added 17, and Jarred Jones had 14 points to go with seven rebounds.
