Marquette announced on Tuesday that head coach Steve Wojciechowski has received a contract extension through the 2021-22 season.

“We are thrilled with the direction the program is heading under Steve’s leadership,” Vice President & Director of Athletics Bill Scholl said in a statement. “This extension not only illustrates our commitment to what Steve and his staff are building at Marquette, but also his commitment to the University.”

The longtime Duke assistant coach took over the program in 2014. In his first season as a head coach, he went 13-19 (4-14 Big East) with a young roster and a thin rotation.

The success in his first season came on the recruiting trail, bringing in the best freshman class in the Big East, according to Scout.com. Three players from his first recruiting class -- Henry Ellenson, Haanif Cheatham and Traci Carter -- are all part of a starting lineup riding a nine-game winning streak.

The Golden Eagles are 10-2 entering Big East play. In the first Bracket Watch of the year, FOX Sports' Stewart Mandell does not have Marquette in the NCAA Tournament. Although, the Golden Eagles will likely be in the bubble conversation come February and March.

Marquette returns to action on Wednesday against Seton Hall in the conference opener.
