MILWAUKEE (AP) The family foundation named after the late former Marquette coach Rick Majerus has given a $1 million gift to the university to create an endowed scholarship in his name.
Marquette said the money will help first-generation students who demonstrate financial need pay for tuition in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is the largest scholarship gift in the school's history.
Majerus died in December 2012. Also a graduate of Marquette with a history degree, Majerus spent 15 years as an assistant and head coach for the Golden Eagles. He was among the first members of his family to attend college.
Majerus won 517 career games in a 25-year head coaching career. He took Utah to the NCAA title game in 1998, losing 78-69 to Kentucky.
