Louisiana-Monroe defeats UAB 74-65

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Tyler Ongwae had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead Louisiana-Monroe to a 74-65 win over Alabama-Birmingham to begin the season on Saturday evening.

Justin Roberson finished with 18 points and five assists, Nick Coppola had 14 points and six assists for Louisiana-Monroe. Majok Deng added 13 points, five rebounds and four blocks for the Warhawks.

Tosin Mehinti had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Tyler Madison added 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting for UAB. Hakeem Baxter scored 11 points, including two 3-pointers.

Down by eight at halftime, UAB marched back to within three at 46-43 midway through the second half. Louisiana Monroe responded with a 14-5 run and Coppola connected on four 3-pointers in the second half as the Warhawks held on.
