Jones, Saint Mary's, Calif., top San Diego 78-72

Rob Jones scored a career-high 31 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Saint Mary's, Calif., to a 78-72 victory over San Diego on Thursday night.

Jones, who played two seasons for San Diego before transferring, scored 13 points over a 5-minute stretch in the second half as the Gaels (14-2, 3-0 West Coast) pulled ahead.

Freshman Johnny Dee led the Toreros (5-9, 0-2) with 22 points, and Christopher Anderson added 16.

Matthew Dellavedova scored 16 points, including eight straight that gave the Gaels their largest lead to that point at 69-62 with 3:24 remaining.

Jones, the WCC's leading rebounder, recorded his 10th double-double of the season.

Saint Mary's, the conference's top defensive team, won despite allowing the Toreros to shoot 50 percent.

The Gaels have won 12 of 13, their lone loss coming to then-No. 6 Baylor on Dec. 22.
