Illinois State basketball coach Tim Jankovich has agreed to join Larry Brown's staff at Southern Methodist University, where it is expected he will become the school's head-coach-in-waiting.

Jankovich leaves Illinois State after five seasons to work under the 71-year-old Brown, who was introduced Monday as the Mustangs' new head coach.

Brown confirmed the news to The Dallas Morning News Thursday, saying he was excited to have the 52-year-old on his staff.

"He had a great team coming back and he's been successful wherever he's been," Brown told the paper. "It's going to be great for everybody. He's going to challenge me."

In five seasons, Jankovich led Illinois State to a 104-64 record and four NIT appearances. He previously served as an assistant at Kansas under Bill Self.

Jankovich's deal with SMU is expected to pay him around $800,000 per year, according to The Morning News. He was scheduled to earn about $400,000 per year at Illinois State after recently signing a new five-year deal.
