Grant Maxey had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Jackson State overcame a five-point deficit in the final 36 seconds to beat Prairie View 54-53 on Monday night.

Maxey grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed 3-pointer by De'Suan Dixon and was fouled by Brandon Webb with 3 seconds left.

Maxey made both free throws and Trant Simpson, who led Prairie View with 13 points, immediately committed a turnover. The Tigers (14-11, 10-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) got the ball back, the Panthers (6-19, 3-9) fouled quickly and Rod Melvin made two free throws, capping an 8-0 run in 34 seconds. Jackson State led 54-51 against a team which would lose its fourth straight and seventh in eight games.

Michael Griffin's free throws with 36 seconds left had given Prairie View a 51-46 lead. Cason Burk answered with a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left and a free throw with 21 seconds left.
