Grant Maxey scored 14 points and Jackson State defeated Prairie View 50-38 Wednesday in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.

Tyrone Hanson added 13 points for the second-seeded Tigers (17-14), who pulled away by holing the Panthers scoreless for nearly eight minutes late in the second half.

Prairie View (10-22) got within 38-35 on Duwan Kornegay's layup with 9:08 to play but didn't score again until 1:24 remained. Brandon Webb led the Panthers with 10 points.

Jackson State shot just 30 percent but made 23-of-34 free throws. Prairie View shot 31 percent and was 10 of 16 from the foul line.

The Tigers will play either Grambling State or Mississippi Valley State in the semifinals Friday.
