Is there more to UConn's self-imposed sanctions?

The Connecticut men's basketball program imposed sanctions on itself for major recruiting violations. The punishment includes two years of probation and the loss of one scholarship for the next two seasons.

But did the university self-report with the thought of protecting coach Jim Calhoun?

The school is saying no evidence exists that Calhoun failed in his compliance duties. The penalties stem from telephone calls and text messages made by the basketball staff in the recruiting of Nate Miles, who never played for the school.
