Howard University announced Friday that a number of student-athletes who were withheld from competing due to possible violations of NCAA rules have been reinstated, myFOXdc.com reported.
University spokesperson Kerry-Ann Hamilton released a statement saying, "Student athletes who were declared ineligible to compete by Howard University last Friday have been reinstated. As a result of this decision, all spring sports teams will compete as scheduled for the remainder of the season."
It is not known how many student-athletes had been withheld from competing.
One Howard softball player said earlier in the week that the school was investigating how some student-athletes acquired their textbooks. The player said some athletes were keeping the difference between the cost of textbooks and their textbook allowance, The Washington Post reported.
"It's been going on for a long time," the player said. "A good majority of the athletes were taking advantage of this.
"There were some people who were saving the money. They didn't spend it. Or some would go buy frivolous things, nothing that relates to school. Some people bought books and other school supplies."
Howard plays in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
