Darrion Pellum equaled his career high with 33 points and Hampton held off Longwood 82-79 on Friday to snap a five-game skid.

The Pirates (5-9) led by as many as 14 in the second half and still held a 12-point advantage at 78-66 with 5:17 to go in the consolation game of the Dr Pepper Classic.

The Lancers (4-10) then went on an 11-0 run, with Antwan Carter scoring six and Martiz Washington capping the spurt with a 3-pointer, to get to 78-77 with 1:47 to play.

Still trailing 82-79 with 8 seconds left, Carter stole the ball, but Washington's 3-point attempt missed with 3 seconds to go.

Pellum was 10 of 21 from the field, hitting 5 of 10 3-pointers, and made all eight of his free throws.

Carter led Longwood with 23 points, Jeremiah Bowman scored 19 and Jan van der Kooij had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
