Drew enrolls at UCLA after leaving UNC
Former North Carolina point guard Larry Drew II will play next for UCLA after unexpectedly leaving the Tar Heels during the season, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.
Drew will have one year of eligibility left and must sit out the 2011-12 season under NCAA rules on transfers.
The son of Atlanta Hawks coach Larry Drew lost his starting point guard job to freshman Kendall Marshall in mid-January following the Tar Heels' 20-point loss to Georgia Tech. His father called UNC head coach Roy Williams a few weeks later to tell him that his son would leave the program, a surprising move since Drew was more than halfway through his junior season.
The six-foot-two California native joins twin forwards David and Travis Wear, who left North Carolina after their freshman season last year and will play for the Bruins in the fall.
Following the departure of Drew, who was averaging 4.4 points and 3.9 assists, the Tar Heels went 13-3 down the stretch. Their season ended Sunday in Newark, N.J., with a 76-69 loss to Kentucky in the East Regional final.
The announcement of Drew's enrollment comes after the team learned forward Tyler Honeycutt would forgo his final two seasons and enter the NBA Draft. Honeycutt averaged 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game for the Bruins, whose season ended with a 73-65 loss to Florida in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
