Ryan Wedel and Rayvonte Rice scored 16 points apiece as Drake defeated Southern Illinois 69-55 Wednesday night in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both schools.

The Bulldogs (6-6) set the tone early, getting their first 12 points on 3-point shots en route to an 18-5 lead midway through the first half. Drake hit 9 of 18 3-pointers in the game, and was 22 for 27 at the free-throw line.

Southern Illinois (6-6) was just 5 of 20 from long range and 12 of 19 from the line.

Justin Bocot led the Salukis with 17 points. Mamadou Seck added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Cartlon Fay had 14 points. Leading scorer Gene Teague did not play after injuring his ankle in practice on Monday.
