Clemson has hired Wright State's Brad Brownell to replace Oliver Purnell.
Clemson said Brownell was to be introduced Tuesday at an afternoon news conference, where terms of the agreement were to be discussed.
"Brad Brownell is an unbelievable coach," Butler coach Brad Stevens told the Associated Press. "He has been a winner everywhere he has been. I am happy to see Brad go to a great school and a great program like Clemson."
After things didn’t work out with Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury on Monday, Clemson focused its search on Brownell — one of the most underrated coaches in the country.
Brownell, 41, is 84-45 in four seasons at Wright State and was also successful in four years as the head coach at UNC-Wilmington.
He went to a pair of NCAA tournaments at UNC-Wilmington and the Indiana native left for the Midwest with a 83-40 mark.
Brownell then went to the Big Dance again in 2007 with Wright State, but hasn’t been able to get back since due to the success of Butler in the Horizon League.
Brownell, who has won at least 20 games in six of his eight seasons since becoming a head coach, was the next pick at Indiana two years ago if Tom Crean hadn’t accepted the Hoosiers job.
Brownell would inherit a Clemson team that went 22-11 and lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Missouri. The Tigers will lose seniors Trevor Booker and David Potter.
