The Bulldogs (5-4), last year's national runner-up, avoided falling below .500 for the first time since they began the 2005-06 season with a 2-3 mark.
Terrence Joyner and Kevin Burwell had 13 points each, and Jason Holmes had five blocks for the Delta Devils (1-6), which had not played since beating Georgia Southern on Nov. 27.
After D'Angelo Jackson's 3-pointer gave it a 3-2 lead, Mississippi Valley State went scoreless for the next 7:23, enabling Butler to build a double-digit cushion it maintained for the rest of the game.
