John Holland scored 28 points to lead Boston University to a 76-67 victory over George Washington in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off Tuesday night.

Jake O'Brien added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Terriers (1-1), who beat the Colonials for the first time in 12 meetings dating to 1979 and will play Villanova in the second round on Wednesday.

The Terriers opened the game on a 21-5 run and never relinquished the lead, twice pumping it up to 20 points in the first half. The Colonials trimmed it to five with 1:32 left on Bryan Bynes' free throws.

But Matt Griffin got a steal and fed Holland for a layup that made it 74-67 with 46 seconds left. Holland added two free throws to cap the scoring with 32 seconds to go.
