OBILE, Ala., Oct. 15 -- University of South Alabama issued the following news release:

The University of South Alabama men's basketball team held their first workouts of the 2010-11 season Friday night.

The Jaguars held a three-hour practice at the Striplin Practice Facility.

"It's always exciting to get a new season started," said head coach Ronnie Arrow. "Our goal every year is to get to the NCAA Tournament and this is the start of the journey. We need to get these guys mentally ready to get there."

The team returns eight letterwinners and four starters, including senior Gary Redus II (Decatur, Ala.).

"I'm ready to get going," said Redus. "It's my last year and I know I have 30-plus games left so I want to go ahead and get the season going."

Contrary to last season, when the Jaguars brought back just four letterwinners, the returning experience will help early in the preseason.

"Since we have so many people coming back, they pretty much know what to expect," said Redus. "Everybody is positive coming in and has a good outlook on the season."

The early part of workouts will be focused on the basics, according to Arrow, including, "fundamentals, getting up and down the court, handling the ball and rebounding."

The Jaguars open the 2010-11 season Nov. 12 at home against Spring Hill.
