ANNOUNCER: A clash between two of the Bundesliga's most porous back lines. Leverkusen traveled to the Schwarzwald-Stadion aiming to bounce back from that disappointing defeat to Dortmund last time out. Only a point better off, Freiburg had their sights set on further stoking the pressure cooker building at Bayern.

Kevin Volland called for Leverkusen to go to Freiburg with the same intensity. But in an evenly matched encounter, the 26-year-old's wayward effort in the 27th minute was as close as either side came to breaking the deadlock inside half an hour. Already without star striker Nils Petersen due to injury, Freiburg suffered another blow before the break when Florian Niederlechner's afternoon was cut short following this tackle with counterpart Lucas Alario.

With Freiburg posing little or no threat going forward, Leverkusen had the attacking impetus, but failed to register a shot on target in the first half. Kai Havertz and co. were held at arm's length by Freiburg's discipline back line. This shot was the sole bright moment in a tough afternoon for Havertz fresh off being called up to the German national team for the second time in his young career.

Deadlocked at the break at 0-0, the encounter remained a hard fought affair after the break as well, as the afternoon became increasingly frustrating for Leverkusen's talented front line, who struggled to make the most of the limited service they received all afternoon.

Instead it was Freiburg, much improved in the second half, who twice came close to grabbing a winner. As first Christian Gunter fired over with the best chance of the entire game 15 minutes from time. That shot was followed up by Luca Waldschmidt hitting the post in the dying embers of the game.

However, there was to be no late twist in the tale, as two shaky back lines clinched precious clean sheets, as it ended Freiburg 0, Leverkusen 0.
