DJ Herz - Activated ahead of Monday's start The Nationals activated Herz (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Monday.
Impact Herz is set to start Monday's game against the Tigers in what will be his first appearance at the major-league level since 2024, as he's completed the long road back from April 2025 Tommy John surgery. The left-hander made 10 rehab starts, posting a 3.16 ERA and 30:7 K:BB over 25.2 innings. Herz threw 4.1 innings and 65 pitches in his last start Sept. 11, so he'll be on a relatively limited workload versus the Tigers.

DJ Herz - Set to be activated Monday Herz (elbow) is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list and start Monday's contest against the Tigers, Kyle Williams of TheBanner.com reports.
Impact Herz will make his return to the major-league roster after being sidelined since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2025. The southpaw combined to pitch 18 innings, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 15 hits and seven walks while striking out 19 batters in seven outings since resuming his minor-league rehab assignment in early August. Herz last pitched Sept. 11, tossing 65 pitches in his latest rehab start with Triple-A Rochester, and he'll likely be on some sort of pitch count in his return to the majors.
SEPTEMBER 20 • ROTOWIRE
Jared Simpson - Sent back to Triple-A Simpson was optioned to Triple-A Rochester after Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Cardinals.
Impact Simpson will head back to Rochester after making four appearances with Washington following his promotion Sept. 1, allowing five runs over 4.1 innings. Southpaw DJ Herz (elbow) is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list and replace Simpson with the major-league roster Monday in Detroit.

Jake Irvin - Fans eight in no-decision Irvin took a no-decision Sunday against the Cardinals, striking out eight while allowing two runs on three hits and no walks in 5.1 innings.
Impact Irvin gave up only three knocks on the afternoon, though two of which went for extra bases. The eight punchouts were his most since April 25 against the White Sox, which was also the last time the right-hander didn't issue a walk prior to Sunday. He's lined up to take the ball in the regular-season finale against the division-rival Mets, holding a 5.40 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 104:46 K:BB across 101.2 innings.

Will Dion - Notches first career save Dion earned his first career save after retiring the only batter he faced in Saturday's 8-5 extra-innings win over the Cardinals.
Impact Dion inherited a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the bottom of the 11th with the Nationals holding a three-run lead. He needed just two pitches to get the job done, retiring Leonardo Bernal on a flyout to right field to secure the win. This was Dion's major-league career save, although he hasn't been the Nationals' most reliable reliever lately since he's given up multiple earned runs in three of his last seven appearances dating back to Aug. 26. Still, he owns a 3.92 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB in 20.2 innings over his last 10 outings.

Riley Cornelio - Earns relief win in extras Saturday Cornelio (3-2) earned the win in extra innings against the Cardinals on Saturday after allowing two unearned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two over 1.2 innings.
Impact Cornelio entered the game in the 10th inning and allowed the automatic runner to score on Masyn Winn's game-tying single. He returned in the 11th with a four-run cushion but again allowed the automatic runner to score on J.J. Wetherholt's RBI single. Cornelio loaded the bases with no outs, then struck out Ivan Herrera and Jordan Walker before making way for Will Dion, who recorded the final out and earned the save. Cornelio hasn't allowed earned runs in any of his last four outings and has pitched well since the All-Star break, posting a 1.86 ERA with a 22:13 K:BB across 19.1 innings in his last 10 appearances.
SEPTEMBER 20 • ROTOWIRE
Erik Tolman - Charged with blown save Tolman was charged with a blown save after allowing one run on three hits while striking out one over one-third of an inning in Saturday's 8-5 extra-innings win over the Cardinals.
Impact Tolman entered the ninth with Washington protecting a 3-2 lead but couldn't close it out. Nathan Church opened the inning with a double before Pedro Pages singled him home to tie the game, and Tolman departed after allowing another single to Jose Fermin. The left-hander was ultimately charged with his second blown save of the season, though Washington recovered to win in 11 innings. This was the fourth time Tolman has given up runs in his 11 big-league outings in 2026, though all four came in his last six appearances dating back to the beginning of September. He has a 3.09 ERA with a 12:5 K:BB in 11 appearances and 11.2 innings in 2026.
SEPTEMBER 20 • ROTOWIRE
Andrew Alvarez - Fires six scoreless innings Alvarez didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the Cardinals after allowing five hits and a walk while striking out eight over six scoreless innings.
Impact Alvarez delivered one of his strongest outings of the season and matched his season-high output in strikeouts, which was set in his previous start Sep 12 against the Angels. The left-hander exited with Washington ahead 3-0, but the bullpen surrendered the lead before the Nationals eventually prevailed 8-5 in 11 innings. Alvarez threw 61 of 92 pitches for strikes and lowered his ERA to 3.17. He hasn't given up more than three earned runs in any of his 15 outings since the All-Star break, posting a 3.58 ERA and 1.46 WHIP with a 65:29 K:BB across 60.1 innings over that stretch. Alvarez is expected to make his final start of the regular season Friday at home against the Mets.
