Khosla family closes purchase of reigning Super Bowl champion Seahawks for $9.6 billion
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Khosla family officially closed its purchase of the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks for $9.612 billion on Thursday.
The Seahawks announced the final step eight days after NFL owners approved the sale.
“We are honored and excited to begin this next chapter," the Khosla family said in a statement. "The Seahawks are known for their championship culture, winning football, and a deep connection to the 12s and the Pacific Northwest.
“We look forward to engaging with the Seattle community and building upon the legacy and traditions that make this franchise so special.”
Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures, will hold the title of chair. Neeru Khosla will serve as controlling owner and president of the Seahawks Charitable Foundation. And Neal Khosla will serve as vice chair.
The family also announced a dozen co-owners: Mark Stevens, the Aramburuzabala family, Val Blavatnik, Sheryl Sokoloff, Gonzalo Hevia Baillères, Jesse van der Werf, Samir Kaul, Sunny Gupta, Nader Naini, Penny Pritzker, Carlyle and Dynasty Equity and Sixth Street.
The sale happened in accordance with the wishes of late team owner Paul Allen, whose estate begun the process of selling the team in February.
Vinod Khosla is the founder of Khosla Ventures, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm. His current net worth is $13.7 billion, according to Forbes. The company invests in experimental technologies such as biomedicine, robotics and was the first venture firm to invest in OpenAI, per Forbes.
The Khosla family was required to relinquish its ownership stake in the San Francisco 49ers as part of the deal.
