WWE Clash of Champions 2016: TJ Perkins vs. Brian Kendrick Set
After winning the WWE Cruiserweight Classic and Cruiserweight Championship on Wednesday, TJ Perkins will defend his title against at Clash of Champions.
TJ Perkins turned into a star after his wild Wednesday night. He defeated Kota Ibushi, considered the favorite to win the WWE Cruiserweight Classic, to make the final match. Perkins then defeated Gran Metalik to become the inaugural Cruiserweight Classic Champion.
However, before that match began, Triple H introduced the new Cruiserweight Championship. So, TJP is the owner of this belt, which hadn’t existed since 2007.
On Monday’s episode of Raw, Brian Kendrick, Cedric Alexander, Gran Metalik, and Rich Swann debuted from the new cruiserweight division. Raw General Manager, Mick Foley put them in a No. 1 Contender’s match for Perkins’ title at WWE Clash of Champions. The result would see Kendrick win to earn this championship bout on Sunday. He submitted Alexander with Captain’s Hook.
Perkins didn’t show up on Raw, so Clash of Champions will be his official main roster debut. It will certainly be a spotlight for the former TNA star, who will have to defend his title.
For Kendrick, this will be his first WWE PPV match since 2009. It took him a while to get back on the main stage, but the former Tag Team Champion accomplished the feat of rising back. This started with a few matches at the Cruiserweight Classic, and continued with Raw, which will give him a championship opportunity.
Perkins vs. Kendrick will join a handful of other matches at Clash, including Kevin Owens vs. Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns vs. Rusev, and Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks vs. Bayley. If these two cruiserweights get similar time to what got seen on Raw, then this may be the start of something fresh for WWE programming.
