Stone Cold Steve Austin is very much in favor of Roman Reigns getting his first heel run since being with the Shield.
WWE legend Stone Cold Steve Austin has been outspoken on the use of Roman Reigns throughout 2016. Most recently, he said the former Shield man needs better storylines. Back in the spring, the Rattlesnake noted that he thought AJ Styles carried Reigns in their May pay-per-view matches.
Along with criticism, fans have clamored for Reigns to turn heel for months. This is due to his character, or lack thereof, in WWE. A drastic change to his persona hasn’t been teased at all on programming, though, despite some of his promos seeming to be borderline (see the Rusev feud).
Well, on this week’s episode of The Steve Austin Show, he noted how Reigns needs to be turned heel. However, it would be left in the hands of the top people or top person (h/t Comicbook.com).
“I predicted this all along. The kid has got to have a heel run before he’s going to be universally loved because that’s just the way that I see it. I’ve always said that I think the guy needs to be a heel first, but, nonetheless, that’s not my call. That’s the booking committee’s call or Vince [McMahon]’s call.”
Austin later explained how fans would love booing Reigns, and when he turns face, they would continue to cheer him.
WWE fans haven’t seen a heel singles run out of the Big Dog yet. This is much like John Cena, who had a bad guy singles run before becoming the Face That Runs the Place. That was way back in the 2003-04 range, though. The current feud with Kevin Owens doesn’t appear to be leading to any type of character change either, especially with Chris Jericho being the potential Superstar to switch roles in this program. Reigns is set to challenge Owens for the WWE Universal Championship at Roadblock: End of the Line.
A heel turn is a dream of many as they would be able to embrace hating Reigns. Maybe it will happen one day, but after being booed out of AT&T Stadium, having thousands against him in the Styles feud, the publicly-acknowledged failed drug test, losing to Finn Balor, and the lackluster Rusev program, if that wouldn’t do it, then we could be looking at the impossible.
