John Cena's WWE SmackDown Return Set for December 27

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 3:53 p.m. ET

John Cena is set to return to WWE TV on SmackDown, December 27.

Recently, we noted how John Cena has his WWE status for 2017 in question with all the outside media projects he’s taking. This includes taking on a new movie role in, “The Pact” as one of the film’s stars. He also hosted “SNL” on Saturday, December 10, which is part of the reason why he has been off SmackDown. Filming for his FOX reality show, “American Grit,” has also taken place during this time.

Well, Cena is going to be returning soon. On Tuesday night’s episode of WWE SmackDown, it got announced that the Leader of the Cenation will be returning on the December 27 episode of the Blue Brand. This comes two-and-a-half months after his last appearance at October’s No Mercy PPV. The company did not announce what he would do in his return.

Cena is coming back right before we get into the year 2017 and just as the Royal Rumble pay-per-view build will likely begin. The show takes place at the end of January.

The 15-time world champion could declare his intention to participate in the 2017 Royal Rumble match. If he wins, he would have an opportunity to win his 16th championship, tying Ric Flair’s record for most title reigns. It would come just one month after New Day became the latest WWE stars to break a record.

Before Cena left on a hiatus, he had feuded with AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose for the WWE World Championship. Given that this is John Cena, he could always get put back into the title hunt for Royal Rumble season as well. Styles vs. Cena III would be a way of filling the seats at the sizeable Alamodome in San Antonio, TX as WWE looks for ways to promote the show.

So, the Face That Runs the Place will be back on everyone’s screens soon. For how long, though, remains to be seen. Looking forward to it?
