Williams, No. 25 South Florida women beat SMU 72-51

DALLAS (AP) Courtney Williams had 21 points with nine rebounds and No. 25 South Florida women beat SMU 72-51 on Tuesday night, in the Bulls' first game in program history as a ranked team.

Shavontae Naylor added 11 points, while Shalethia Stringfield and Alisia Jenkins scored 10 apiece for USF (20-4, 11-1 American), which has won six games in a row and 14 of its last 15.

SMU went scoreless for six-plus minutes early in the first half and USF used an 18-4 run to open up a 23-9 advantage and led by as many as 17 in the first half.

A 14-3 spurt to open the second half made it 51-25 and USF led by as many as 34 in the second half.

SMU (5-18, 1-11) made just 18 of 62 (29 percent) field goals and 7 of 13 free throws.

Destynee Hives-McCray had 11 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Mustangs.
