Wash. U. wins D-III women's title over Hope
Washington University won its fifth Division III women's title since 1998 with a 65-59 victory over Hope College on Saturday.
Alex Hoover scored 18 points, and Jaimie McFarlin had 15 rebounds and 14 points for the Bears (29-2).
Carrie Snikkers led The Flying Dutch (32-2) with 22 points and Philana Greene added 18.
The Bears last won the national championship in 2001, the last of four in a row for the St. Louis school.
Hoover scored 14 points in the second half, including a pair of layups as the Bears pulled away with a 12-2 run that put them ahead 44-35 with just under 10 minutes left.
The Flying Dutch, from Western Michigan, got within three after Snikkers made a 3-pointer with 6:05 to play, but she turned the ball over twice. She and Greene missed 3s that would've tied it.
Hope got it within 3 once more after Snikkers made two free throws, but never got the ball back with a chance to tie. Janice Evans made two of her own with 3:30 to play.
The Bears made 13 of 14 free throws in the final two minutes.
