Ten and counting. Texas A&M's domination of rival Texas just keeps on going.
Danielle Adams scored 26 points and the No. 5 Aggies beat the Longhorns 68-65 on Sunday, their 10th consecutive win over their big rivals in a streak that stretches back to February 2007.
''I haven't lost to Texas since I've been here,'' Texas A&M senior guard Sydney Colson said. ''That's something to be proud of.''
This one was different than most in the streak. It was the first time since 2008 the Longhorns had stayed within 10 points of the Aggies.
But the result was the same.
Texas A&M (24-3, 12-2 Big 12) held the Longhorns to just 17 points in the first half - the second-lowest first-half total in Texas history - then held on while the Longhorns rallied with 48 in the second.
Adams made two critical free throws with 16 seconds left that put the Aggies ahead 66-59 and put the game out of reach. The Longhorns made two last desperate 3-pointers, the last with 1 second left.
Texas A&M players talked about the streak before the game and their desire to stretch it to a morale-breaking level.
''Once you get up to double-digits, teams can really feel like you have them down. It's a sense of pride for our team,'' Colson said. ''It will be a sense of motivation that will make you keep going after them.''
The double-whammy for Texas is that the Longhorns needed a big win to boost their chances of making the NCAA tournament as an at-large team if they can't play their way in by winning the Big 12 tournament.
Texas lost its third in a row, fourth in five games and is 0-10 this season against ranked opponents. The Longhorns have just two games left to get to .500 in the Big 12.
''I've been pretty honest with them. I've said we've got to win some ball games,'' Texas coach Gail Goestenkors said. ''There's a great sense of urgency. We've still got to prove some things and there's not much time left.''
Yvonne Anderson scored 24 points for the Longhorns (17-11, 6-8 Big 12) and sparked the second-half rally.
''We put our heart on that floor and tonight we didn't get rewarded for it,'' Anderson said. ''If you see what we did in that second half, we can beat these teams. It's tough to be repeating the same lesson.''
In the first half, the Aggies stifled Texas with defense that challenged every shot on the perimeter and denied just about any entry pass the Longhorns looked for.
Texas shot just 22 percent from the field in the half and 11 of its first 17 shots were from 3-point range. Pressure from Aggies guards twice forced the Longhorns into shot-clock violations and Texas had 13 turnovers in the half.
Texas A&M would have had a bigger lead if not for its own shooting problems. Adams and White scored at will and the Aggies got 24 of their 32 points in the half in the paint, but A&M otherwise struggled to shoot from any distance longer than about 8 feet.
Adams scored 10 of the Aggies' first 14 points of the second, easily posting up for layups. She had an easy time of it because Texas center Ashley Gayle spent much of the game in foul trouble. Adams grabbed eight offensive rebounds.
But Texas found its shooting touch and scored 17 points in 7 minutes. But even then, the Longhorns were struggling to chip away at the lead. When Goestenkors was hit with a technical foul, Sydney Carter's two free throws gave Texas A&M a 48-34 lead.
A 20-11 run by Texas and a rash of turnovers by the Aggies eventually helped the Longhorns rally. Texas shot 59 percent in the second half and Kathleen Nash's 3-pointer got Texas within nine. Anderson scored 10 points in the run and her 3-point play made it 60-54 with 5 minutes left.
Chassidy Fussell's layup with 21 seconds left pulled Texas within five, but Gayle was whistled for her fifth foul, sending Adams to the line for the game-clinching free throws. The Aggies made 10 of 13 free throws in the second half.
''My guards in the second half got lit up like a Christmas tree,'' Texas A&M coach Gary Blair said. ''It's a win and we'll take it. The streak is alive.''
