No. 22 West Virginia turns back Marshall 69-56

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) Bria Holmes scored 16 points, Lanay Montgomery had 15 points and 14 rebounds as No. 22 West Virginia used a strong first half to beat Marshall 69-56 on Saturday.

Averee Fields added 12 points and Teana Muldrow had 14 rebounds for the Mountaineers (9-1), who outrebounded the Thundering Herd 40-25.

Leah Scott and Norrisha Victrum had 15 points apiece for Marshall (6-3).

A jumper by AJ Johnson had Marshall within 23-18 with just under four minutes left in the first half but West Virginia scored the last 11 points to make it 34-18 at the half. Tyara Warren and Montgomery each scored twice.

Fields scored four points and Holmes had a layup for a 46-28 lead six minutes into the second half before McKenzie Akers' 3-pointer cut it to 51-44 midway through the half. Holmes answered with consecutive 3s in a decisive 12-0 run.
