Louisville women run past Tennessee-Martin

Shoni Schimmel and Bria Smith each scored 16 points to help No. 7 Louisville beat Tennessee-Martin 79-61 on Monday night.

The Cardinals (7-0) raced out to a 22-6 lead in the first eight minutes and never trailed.

Louisville scored several times in transition early on, regularly pushing the ball up the floor quickly after a turnover or rebound. The Cardinals shot 60 percent in the first half and 55 percent for the game.

UT Martin (1-6) shot 31 percent from the floor in the half, missing a handful of open layups and losing the ball a few times in a crowd of defenders.

The Skyhawks improved after halftime, cutting a 19-point halftime defecit to 68-57 late in the game and forcing Louisville to call a timeout.

Heather Butler finished with 17 points and Jasmine Newsome 16 for UTM.

Louisville's Megan Deines had 15 points and Sara Hammond 14.
