BC beats Virginia Tech 49-37 in ACC women's tournament
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) Ella Awobajo scored 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for her first double-double and 14th-seeded Boston College beat 11th-seeded Virginia Tech 49-37 on Wednesday in the first round of the ACC women's tournament.
The Eagles (15-15) - who came in having lost 10 of their last 11 and lost their regular-season meeting with the Hokies by 25 points - advanced to play No. 6 seed North Carolina State on Thursday.
Nicole Boudreau scored all 10 of her points in the third quarter when the Eagles outscored the Hokies 14-8 to build a nine-point cushion that they expanded to 12 in the final period. Virginia Tech (17-13) cut it to seven with 2:29 left but didn't score again. Awobajo and Kelly Hughes, who finished with 12 points, combined for five free throws in the final minute.
BC survived 23 turnovers in part by making 18 of 21 free throws and holding a 44-27 rebounding advantage.
Chanette Hicks scored 11 points for Virginia Tech, which shot a season-low 22 percent.
