Arkansas-Pine Bluff has hired Nate Kilbert from conference rival Mississippi Valley State as its new women's basketball coach.

He succeeds Cary Shelton, who resigned after three seasons. Kilbert was honored as Southwestern Athletic Conference coach of the year after leading Mississippi Valley State to the league's regular-season title and a berth in the WNIT. He spent 11 years as the coach at Mississippi Valley State and was an assistant at Alcorn State from 1991-2001.

The hiring was announced during a news conference Friday.

Kilbert won't officially start until July 1, when Shelton's resignation becomes effective.
