Velasquez: “DC could beat Jon Jones”

Published Oct. 16, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Wednesday night, the UFC heavyweight champion pressed pause on his preparation to join Chael Sonnen and Kenny Florian on UFC Tonight to discuss this weekend’s main event, what separates him from the rest of the division’s contenders, and the challenger’s insistence that “(Cain) hits like a girl and couldn’t finish me with his best punches.”

“With a loss, you try to take something positive from your loses,” Velasquez responded when asked by Sonnen if the comments get under his skin. “With him, there wasn’t anything really positive that he could take from it except that I didn’t finish the fight. That was it. It doesn’t get under my skin at all.”

In addition to shedding a glimpse on his game plan for Saturday’s trilogy fight with “Cigano,” the American Kickboxing Academy product was asked about teammate, coach, and fellow UFC 166 competitor Daniel Cormier’s proposed moved to the light heavyweight ranks following his bout with Roy Nelson.

Never one to mince words, the heavyweight champion not only said that Cormier will be able to make the cut to 205 pounds successfully, but that he “will beat Jon Jones.”
