UFC 205 results and highlights: Woodley vs Thompson

Stephen Thompson looks to win his eighth in a row, while Tyron Woodley seeks to defend his title for the first time.
Tyron Woodley, after his amazing performance against Robbie Lawler, is looking to defend his title for the first time since winning the championship. Stephen Thompson has the longest win streak in the welterweight division with seven in a row, and he’s attempting to extend it to eight at UFC 205.
Woodley was angling for a “money fight” against GSP or other contenders, but Thompson won the lottery by cashing in his recent win over “The Red King” Rory MacDonald for a shot at championship glory. Here’s what happened, round by round, in their encounter.
Round 1: Feeling out process as Thompson switches stances in the center of the octagon. Woodley catches a kick and takes Thompson down. Woodley in a half-guard, trying to apply some ground and pound. Woodley is pounding on Thompson’s liver. One minute left, and Woodley is keeping control of the ground position. Thompson gets into the guard position and gets out of the way of major damage. Woodley stands up and lands some devastating hammer fists to Thompson’s stomach, then dives back down for some more ground and pound. Thompson’s face is bloody — he’s got a nice laceration across the bridge of his nose. Dominant round for Woodley.
FanSided scored this round 10-9 for Woodley.
Round 2: Woodley ties Thompson up against the cage early in the round. Looks like Woodley is going to use his superior wrestling to grind Thompson all around the octagon. Thompson breaks free at the 2:45 mark. Spinning back kick by Thompson connects, and Woodley shakes it off. Nice right straight by Thompson. Combination by Thompson as he begins to get a little more comfortable. Woodley is keeping his back against the cage for most of this fight so far, Thompson controlling all the angles. The champ looks like he’s starting to gas a bit. If it keeps going like this, Woodley is going to be sucking wind by the fifth round.
FanSided scored this round 10-9 Thompson.
Round 3: Thompson is putting together some nice punching combinations, keeping his hands low and springing forward with lefts and rights. Woodley is looking slow and plodding, as he looks for an opening in Thompson’s game — the challenger is not leaving the champ with many options here. Woodley unleashes a brutal leg kick that almost topples Thompson. That was beautiful. Woodley so far is playing into Thompson’s game. Thirty seconds left and Woodley tries to land a few haymakers to no avail. Woodley needs to pick up his output here if he looks to sway judges his way.
FanSided scored this round 10-9 Thompson.
Round 4: Thompson continues to control the action inside the octagon. Woodley scores with a HUGE straight right! Thompson is hurt, and Woodley connects with a second right, this time Thompson falls to the canvas! The challenger is bleeding heavily, and now Woodley has a deep guillotine. Thompson defends against the choke and pushes Woodley against the fence. Woodley has a DEEP guillotine and somehow Thompson is surviving and even throwing punches from the position! This is crazy! The crowd is loving this action. Thirty seconds left. Thompson is in the top position and dropping rights from Woodley’s guard. What a show of heart from Thompson.

Round 5: Jumping round kick from Thompson starts the round. “Wonderboy” chants from the crowd. A lot of respect being shown by both men in this final frame. Both men cautious, but Thompson continues to push the action. The challenger is pumping the left jab and connecting while Woodley is just looking for the wind-up right. Thompson is gliding around the octagon with ease, picking his shots and connecting. Three-punch combination by Thompson goes high and low. Thompson is picking apart Woodley now as the champ looks like he’s gassed out. Wow. What a close fight!

A little confusion in the reading of the results as Tyron was announced as the winner, but the actual winner was both men … and the crowd. What a fight!
