UFC 203: Mickey Gall Beats Down and Chokes Out CM Punk

UFC 203’s highly anticipated debut of WWE Superstar CM Punk went as expected, with Mickey Gall winning quickly in the first round.
UFC 203’s most famous participant was in the third fight of the main card, as former WWE superstar CM Punk took on 2-0 Mickey Gall.
Mickey Gall saw an opportunity to join the UFC and seized it. President Dana White was in attendance for a local New Jersey show to film Lookin’ for a Fight. So Gall won his MMA debut, then called out CM Punk. White liked what he heard and signed Gall.
One fight at UFC 196 later, and Gall is finally fighting CM Punk. Punk signed with the promotion at the end of 2014, but injuries have postponed his debut repeatedly. Punk chose a great team to train with at Roufusport Academy, but has unfortunately picked up their injury tendency (see: Anthony Pettis, Erik Koch).
All fans know of Punk was what was put on display in the docuseries The Evolution of Punk. We don’t know if he has solid striking or grappling, but his teammates respect him that’s for sure.
Mickey Gall took down Punk immediately and began to transition all over the inexperienced Punk. Punk put up whatever defense he could, but eventually Gall got his back. After battering Punk with ground and pound for what seemed like way too long, Gall eventually got the arm under the neck. CM Punk was forced to tap.
Afterwards, CM Punk said he will be back. However, it’s hard to think of a fair opponent they could possibly find that could be promoted as UFC-caliber. What else is there to say other than, what else did we expect?
Good on CM Punk for putting himself out there though. Not many people possess that much courage.
