UFC 203: Jessica Andrade Submits Calderwood in First

UFC 203’s main card opened up with another fantastic performance from Jessica Andrade, when she submitted Joanne Calderwood with a guillotine.
Two of the top strawweights in the world met in the Octagon at UFC 203, as #6 Joanne Calderwood fights #7 Jessica Andrade.
Jessica Andrade fought at bantamweight for the first seven fights of her UFC career and was successful with a 4-3 record despite her five-foot two-inch stature. Andrade moved to strawweight earlier this year and dominated former title challenger Jessica Penne, staking her claim as a top strawweight.
Joanne Calderwood failed to meet expectations early in her Octagon career, losing to Maryna Moroz via quick submission. Calderwood caught her stride since then, defeating Cortney Casey in a wild fight, and dominating Valerie Letourneau in June.
Calderwood of course attempted to use her range early on, with long straight kicks. Andrade then got inside and landed a couple powerful takedowns. Andrade effectively maintained top position mixing transitions with ground and pound. The Brazilian maintained top position with another slam.
Through the heavy ground and pound of Andrade, Calderwood attempted to stand up. However, her head was exposed and Andrade slapped on a guillotine. Andrade jumped guard, squeezed tight, and got the tap!
What’s next for Andrade? A number one contender’s match against Karolina Kowalkiewicz? How about a fight against Carla Esparza? The former champion was the target of Andrade’s post-fight call out in her strawweight debut. Esparza has not fought since April and does not have a scheduled opponent.
Where does Calderwood go from here? She looked incredible against Letourneau, but fell flat with another first round defeat. She was previously scheduled to fight Paige VanZant, so perhaps that is a fight that could be made after the young strawweight’s jumping switch kick knockout against Bec Rawlings.
