Thiago Silva granted bond, will be released from jail
Ex-UFC light-heavyweight Thiago Silva is expected to be released from jail on Friday after a Broward County, Florida circuit judge granted him a $25,000 bond.
Silva, a Brazilian native, had originally been denied bail as a potential flight risk, but on Friday, Judge Geoffrey D. Cohen reversed the magistrate's original decision, paving the way for his release.
Cohen ordered conditions for his release that require Silva to stay away from his ex-wife Thaysa, to abstain from drugs and alcohol, wear an ankle monitoring bracelet, attend anger management classes and abide by a 10 pm curfew.
The 31-year-old Silva was originally arrested on Feb. 6 and charged with attempted murder after an armed standoff with police, who used a stun gun to incapacitate him, according to various news reports. That event was precipitated by another event the same day when Silva allegedly went into a jiu-jitsu school which belongs to famed Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor Pablo Popovitch and allegedly threatened people there. Police said that at one point, Silva stuck a gun in his ex-wife's mouth, and threatened Popovitch.
Silva's charges were later reduced to two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, one count of resisting an officer without violence, and one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Shortly after his arrest last month, the UFC terminated his contract. He had been scheduled to fight against Ovince St. Preux at UFC 171 on March 15. The Brazilian had a career record of 16-3 with 2 no contests.
His next court date is set for March 13 at 9 am.
