Sage Northcutt explains incredible armbar escape at UFC 200
Lightweight phenom Sage Northcutt scored his third win inside the Octagon on Saturday night at UFC 200. But midway through the second round, it looked like "Super" Sage was headed toward his second straight submission loss.
Northcutt's opponent, Enrique Marin, was able to get the fight to the ground and desperately worked an armbar. The TUF Latin America winner was able to pry Northcutt's hands apart and began cranking the 20-year-old's arm.
But despite the apparent gravity of the situation, Northcutt says he knew exactly what he needed to do to survive the submission attempt.
"You know, the first thing people are taught when someone is getting an armbar on them is obviously to hold on tight, and to be able to turn the thumb," Northcutt told FOX Sports. "So, you don't want that thumb straight up and down because you don't want to snap your elbow, or anything with your bicep or anything like that. So, doing that first, that was the most important thing."
Northcutt showed a lot of heart in his win against Marin. Especially after being accused of tapping quickly in his first UFC loss. The young fighter was able to recall years of training during one of the more high-pressure situations a fighter can face, and truly earned a win.
