Rumors swirling about Rory MacDonald vs Demian Maia in 2014

Published Dec. 4, 2013 12:00 a.m. ET

Two welterweights looking to get back on track could meet in 2014 as rumors are currently swirling about a potential matchup pitting submission specialist Demian Maia against Rory MacDonald sometime next year.

While there is no confirmation about the fight as of yet, UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwani reported on Wednesday that there are talks about the bout taking place although it's far from official at this point.

Following a 3-0 start to his welterweight career that included wins over Dong Hyun Kim, Rick Story and Jon Fitch, Demian Maia finally felt the sting of defeat when he lost a close decision to Jake Shields earlier this year in his home country of Brazil.

Meanwhile, MacDonald's title hopes were snuffed out at UFC 167 when he was defeated by veteran contender Robbie Lawler by split decision, marking his first loss after five straight wins.

While the fight is just a rumor for now, a pairing between Maia and MacDonald makes a lot of sense given both competitors ranking in the top ten as well as the close nature of their respective losses.

FOX Sports will have more information on this potential fight as it becomes available.
