Robbie Lawler pulls out of UFC 205 vs. Donald Cerrone

Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone is a fight that was too good to be true, as the former welterweight champion pulled out of UFC 205.
When Robbie Lawler’s welterweight title reign came to an end, he wasn’t interested in taking a break. Instead, he wanted to come back right away and put himself back into the mix by fighting on the UFC’s first card at Madison Square Garden.
The two have fan-friendly styles and are among the most beloved fighters on the planet. As far as matchmaking, you couldn’t get any better than this fight. Even though they’re both extremely durable, Lawler was forced to pull out of UFC 205. TMZ was the first to report it, with MMA Fighting stating he needed more time after getting knocked out.
It didn’t take long to find him an opponent as Donald Cerrone, fresh off a win over Rick Story, volunteered on Twitter.

It’s extremely disappointing for Lawler, who was considered one of the top pound-for-pound fighters during his championship reign. While he remains extremely talented, he has been in plenty of wars recently, and his knockout loss to Tyron Woodley was a sign that it has caught up to him. One silver lining in all of this is that, with this extra time off, Lawler can come back even stronger.
After Cerrone missed out on becoming the lightweight champion, he has reinvented himself in the welterweight division by stringing together a three-fight win streak. A fourth straight win over Lawler would’ve given him no shortage of options in both lightweight and welterweight.
But rather than hang his head in disappointment, Cowboy got back to his trademark style of fighting anyone and at any time. Once CB Dollaway pulled out of UFC 203 due to an elevator incident, he immediately texted Dana White:
Who is better, crazier and more BAD ASS then @Cowboycerrone !!!!!? #asrealasitgets pic.twitter.com/p9AuW07v69

Cerrone is expressing interest in a fight at light heavyweight just one month after he won at welterweight. What a savage. As long as Cerrone keeps up that attitude, he shouldn’t have trouble finding a new opponent.
