Rafael dos Anjos leaves Kings MMA to open his own gym

Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos is parting ways with Kings MMA.
Kings MMA is run by coach Rafael Cordeiro. Cordeiro won The Shawn Tompkins Coach of the Year award for 2012 and 2014. Many people consider Kings MMA to be the reason Rafael dos Anjos and Fabricio Werdum had a career resurgence and captured the UFC titles in their divisions. Both fighters went on long winning streaks and ultimately became champions. Both have since lost their titles.
In an interview with Combate.com Dos Anjos said, “I haven’t opened my own gym yet, but it’s a matter of time.” “I really left Kings MMA, it wasn’t working anymore.”
He had half of his fight camp in Mexico City to prepare for the city’s high altitude. According to him, the camp is going great.
“I’m very much in sync with the people. We trained in the mountains of Mammoth for 20 days and now we moved down to Mexico City just 10 days before the fight and it’s been great. It’s a really cool experience and I’m dropping weight nicely, thank God. Everything is perfect.”
Dos Anjos (25-8 MMA, 14-6 UFC) won the UFC lightweight title by beating Anthony Pettis via unanimous decision at UFC 185. Dos Anjos had only one title defense against Donald Cerrone before losing the title to now champion Eddie Alvarez.
Dos Anjos is set to face Tony Ferguson at the Ultimate Fighter Latin America 3 Finale on November 5. Ferguson (22-3 MMA, 11-1 UFC) is currently on a eight fight win streak and ranked No. 3 in the official UFC rankings. His last loss was in 2012 to Michael Johnson by unanimous decision.
The winner of Ferguson and dos Anjos would be expected to face the winner of McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez to get their chance to win the UFC lightweight championship.
You can watch the Ultimate Fighter Latin America 3 Finale on November 5 at 10 PM ET on Fox Sports 1.
