Nate Diaz receives $50k fine from NSAC

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 4:52 p.m. ET

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has handed Nate Diaz a $50,000 fine for his part in an altercation with Conor McGregor at a press conference.

Nate Diaz has been handed a fine for his role in an altercation with Conor McGregor at a press conference ahead of UFC 202 in August.

At the press conference, Diaz walked off stage and started shouting at McGregor after McGregor showed up 30 minutes late. Shortly after, chaos erupted and both fighters and teams started throwing water bottles at each other.

Diaz was fined 2.5 percent of his $2 million purse ($50,000) and agreed to 50 hours of community service.

McGregor received his punishment in October. He received the same punishment, thought he’ll pay a larger fine ($75,000) since his purse was larger ($3 million). He has since appealed the case and filed a petition for judicial review.

Diaz was already in hot water with USADA for using a vape pen at the post-fight press conference. When asked what he was smoking he replied, “It’s CBD. It helps with the healing process and inflammation, stuff like that. So you want to get these for before and after the fights, training. It’ll make your life a better place.” He ended up not being fined because he passed the fight night drug test.

UFC 202 was a rematch for Diaz and McGregor. The two previously fought at UFC 196 where Diaz upset McGregor by submitting him in the second round. McGregor got redemption by beating Diaz by unanimous decision at UFC 202.

While unprofessional, the chaos at the press conference might have been a good thing for the UFC. UFC 202 broke the UFC’s all-time pay per view record at a stunning 1.65 million buys. The bottle throwing fiasco may have helped with the hype for the fight and helped with all the pay per view buys. With both fighters earning pay per view points, it also lined their pockets nicely.
