Josh Koscheck unsure of future in UFC: 'It has been a fun ride'
Former welterweight world title challenger Josh Koshceck lost for the fifth straight time, and the second time in three weeks, Saturday at Rio's UFC Fight Night card. Post-fight, the 37-year-old wouldn't say if he would retire just yet.
"I can't make that decision right now," Koscheck said.
"I'll go home and talk to the old lady and we'll see what happens."
Koscheck, a business owner, said he has other things to keep him busy besides fighting in the UFC but needs more time to consider what is next for him. "I do have a lot of stuff going on outside the UFC," he said.
"I'm pretty busy when it comes to other businesses and things, so I think I will take the right time and make the decision when it comes."
Before fighting in February at UFC 184 against Jake Ellenberger, Koscheck had taken nearly a year and a half off from active competition. Despite losing to Ellenberger by submission, Koscheck answered the call when the UFC asked him to fight Erick Silva Saturday on short notice.
If UFC president Dana White had another short-notice fight for Koscheck, the game wrestler said that he again wouldn't hesitate to say yes. For his part, White said that he would not ask Koscheck to do that.
In fact, White said at the post-Fight Night news conference that he plans to try to convince Koshceck to retire.
"I have a soft spot for the [Ultimate Fighter] Season 1 guys," White said.
"Koscheck doesn't want to retire. He wants to talk in a couple days. I'm going to try to push him in that direction."
Whatever the top welterweight decides to do, he said that he has enjoyed his time in MMA and the UFC. The competition is just getting younger and better.
"I've got a good long career since The Ultimate Fighter 1, and it's been a fun ride," Koscheck said.
"This sport is changing, and these guys are getting better. These young guys are just getting tougher. I feel like my skills are there; I just need to put it together."
