Josh Barnett submits Andrei Arlovski following bloody war at UFC Fight Night 93


Here is how the UFC Fight Night 93 heavyweight main event fight between Andrei Arlovski vs. Josh Barnett played out
On Saturday, September 3, a pair of former UFC heavyweight champions in Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett met in the main event of UFC Fight Night 93. The entire event went down at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany.
Arlovski looked to get back into the win column after suffering a second round knockout to current number one contender Alistair Overeem. This mark his second straight stoppage loss after previously be knocked out by reigning champ Stipe Miocic at UFC 195 in January. Barnett (34-8) was also be looking to right the ship after seeing being submitted by Ben Rothwell at UFC on FOX 18 in January.
Here is how the fight unfolded, round-by-round, including FanSided’s scoring of the fight.
ROUND 1: No touch of the gloves from either man as they immediately meet in the center of the Octagon. After a short feeling out process, both men start slinging leather. Initially Arlovski was rocked by a right hook but regained his senses and rocked Barnett with his own straight right. A visibly wobbly Barnett looked to recover and planted another short right to the jaw of Arlovski, wobbling him once again. Arlovski looked to escape more damage as he clinched up and pressed the action into the cage. Barnett would reverse position and followed up with a series of knees to the mid-section of his opponent. Arlovski evaded damage with a trip, dragging Barnett down to the canvas. With little action taking place on the canvas, the referee stood both men back up. With his opponent reeling. ROUND 2: Barnett came out looking to land on overhand right. Arlovski evaded and clinched back up, looking to secure the takedown against the fence. After another moment of no action, the referee separated them. Both men had their moments as they traded shots in the center of the canvas. However, Barnett would once again looked to escape the attack with a clinch against the fence. With less than two minutes left, Arlovski attempted another trip but Barnett reversed and secured full mount. Barnett closed out the second frame with a barrage of punches and elbows from the top. ROUND 3: Visibly exhausted, Arlovski looked to finish the fight early in the third frame as he slung a series of combos towards his opponent’s skull. Barnett responded with a violent uppercut. After taking a thumb to the eye, Barnett turned and motioned to the ref something was wrong. However, the referee did not see the foul so Arlovski swarmed in with a flurry of standing elbows and punches. Barnett evaded damage by clinching up and dragging the fight back to the canvas, where he would secure full mount once again. As Arlovski squirmed beneath him, Barnett sunk in the rear naked choke, forcing his opponent to tap.
