Jose Aldo injured, out of UFC 176 main event against Chad Mendes

UFC 176 is now devoid of a title fight.

Jose Aldo is injured and had to pull out of the featherweight title main event of the Aug. 2 card in Los Angeles against Chad Mendes, UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwani reported Wednesday night. UFC president Dana White confirmed the news.

Aldo's camp Nova Uniao announced (h/t MMA Fighting) that Aldo suffered a shoulder and cervical spine injury after being taken down in training this week. Aldo began physical therapy this week, per the release, and won't be able to train for three weeks, when he'll be examined again for the spine injury. No new main event has been set.

Aldo (24-1) has won 17 straight fights and was the UFC's first featherweight champion. He's coming off a five-round unanimous decision win over Ricardo Lamas at UFC 169 in February. Aldo had previously beaten Mendes by knockout two years ago.

Since that loss, Mendes (16-1) has won five in a row, including a decision win over Nik Lentz at UFC Fight Night in December. He's currently ranked No. 1 among featherweight contenders in the UFC.
