John Lineker stops Michael McDonald in one at UFC Fight Night main event

Published Jul. 13, 2016 11:43 p.m. ET

John Lineker was in line for a flyweight title shot before weight issues bumped him up a class. On Wednesday night, the Brazilian showed for certain that he should be considered among the bantamweight title contenders with a KO victory over Michael McDonald at UFC Fight Night in South Dakota.

"Dominick Cruz, I'm coming for you, baby!" he shouted at the 135-pound champion after his win.

The end for McDonald came at 2:43, but he was in a good deal of trouble for some time by that point.

Linker walked McDonald down against the cage and landed an overhand right to the chin that dropped the former title challenger. McDonald gamely got back to his feet and fired back, hard. Lineker responded in kind, however, landing a hard left hook to the chin that hurt McDonald again.

Another left hook soon followed, putting McDonald pretty much out of the fight for good. Lineker followed up with punches and the referee stepped in to call a halt to the contest.

"I came here to please the crowd, and I think I managed to do that," Lineker said.

Indeed he did, while improving to 28-7. McDonald's mark drops to 17-4.
