Freddie Roach made Georges St-Pierre a pretty big promise

Published Jun. 2, 2016 7:48 p.m. ET

It's been nearly three years since Georges St-Pierre decided to take an extended leave of absence from the UFC and the welterweight division he ruled for more than five years.

St-Pierre left the sport because of the immense pressures of being champion and his desire to live a life outside of his "obsessive" training regimen. But over the past six months, talk of an imminent return by GSP has picked up, with former champ telling the media he planned to try a modified training camp to see how he feels.

According to world-renowned boxing coach Freddie Roach, who is best known for his work with Manny Pacquiao, GSP is starting that training camp pretty soon.

"Georges came by the gym but we haven't made any decisions yet," Roach told FightHubTV's Marcos Villegas. "But he's going to start training camp pretty soon to see how he feels and if his heart feels like he could do it again, he'll possibly do it again. But as far as we go right now, I did work out with him and so forth, but no decision has been made. I think when he feels it's the right time, then we'll make a decision."

And if St-Pierre decides to return, he asked Roach to make him a pretty big promise.

"I had to make one promise ... I will be in his corner if he does fight again," Roach said.

Roach and St-Pierre have worked together several times over the course of his career, with GSP traveling from Canada to Santa Monica to train with Roach.

With GSP attending UFC events and starting up training again, fans are hoping to see Roach accompany St-Pierre to the Octagon sometime in 2016.
