Following UFC release, Jake Shields signs with World Series of Fighting
It didn't take long for former UFC welterweight contender and Strikeforce champion Jake Shields to find a new home for fighting as he has signed a multi-fight deal with World Series of Fighting.
World Series of Fighting senior executive vice-president Ali Abdel-Aziz confirmed the signing to FOX Sports on Thursday.
Shields was released from the UFC in a shocking move just after his loss to Hector Lombard at UFC 171. The former two division champion was fresh off three straight wins prior to the defeat in March, but the UFC opted to release Shields from his contract.
Now the veteran competitor will start new in World Series of Fighting alongside a slew of top welterweight including their champion Rousimar Palhares, Jon Fitch, and Josh Burkman.
Shields has been ranked as a top 10 fighter for the majority of his career, not to mention a brief run at middleweight where he also won a title as well as defeated both Robbie Lawler and Dan Henderson in Strikeforce.
His UFC career was filled with a few more ups and downs, but Shields remained a top contender as he was hoping to move close to another title shot before the setback against Lombard.
Stepping into the new promotion, Shields will have plenty of opponents to face with a chance to get back on the radar as one of the best welterweights in the world.
