Fighter independence, Nick Diaz's return & everything else we want to see in 2016

In the latest episode of the Deep Waters Podcast, (above) we discuss what we hope to see happen in the new year. There's a lot we want to see in 2016, from Nick Diaz having his unfair suspension ended, to Conor McGregor vying for titles in two weight classes, and fighters speaking up for themselves more to seek better treatment and pay.

"The more fighters have clout and independence, the better it is for the sport," co-host Sam Sheridan says.

To Sam, it isn't even about wanting to do the right thing for athletes, but rather selfishly wanting the sport of MMA to attract the highest-caliber competitors. "It's not even just a question of fairness, but I think also of getting the most talented athletes, into the fight game," he explained.

"I want to see them doing this, and not boxing, I want to see them doing this and not playing football. I want them to say, 'Oh, I can make more money in the UFC than I can playing in the NFL.' You get some of that athletic talent, coupled with the martial arts expertise, and you get a much better quality fighter. I think it will just be more fun to watch."

We also look forward to big match-ups like the UFC 195 main event between Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit, taking place Saturday in Las Vegas. Sam talks about how Lawler has become the "gold standard" for exciting fights, and we talk about the possibility of big-time Japanese MMA starting to return.

All that and more is on this week's episode. So start your new year right by listening in, and getting ready for this weekend's fights.
