Eddie Alvarez vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov targeted for UFC 207 in Toronto
UFC lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez will look to make his first title defense against Khabib Nurmagomedov
Eddie Alvarez will not be facing Conor McGregor at UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden.
Instead, the recently the UFC looking to book the the lightweight champion against the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 207 in Toronto.
The news was broke during Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight and comes just one day removed from a Twitter exchange between Alvarez, McGregor, Nurmagomedov and UFC President Dana White captivated the mixed martial arts community.
According to the report, UFC officials sent Alvarez a bout agreement to face Nurmagomedov at UFC 205 in November. However, Alvarez failed to sign it by the deadline so the UFC sent him another contract for the December fight card instead .
Alvarez (28-4), also a former Bellator, Bodog and MFC champion, was crowned the 155-pound champion after finishing then-champion Rafael dos Anjos with strikes in the first round of their title fight at UFC Fight Night 90 in July. Not soon after, Alvarez stating he was hoping for a fight against the winner of the second fight be between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz.
The Philadelphia native previously earned his shot at the belt with back-to-back decision wins over former Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez and former UFC champ Anthony Pettis. He will enter this title fight 22 career stoppage wins, including 15 by way of (T)KO.
Nurmagomedov (23-0), a Sambo world champion, is currently riding a seven fight win streak inside the Octagon. In his most recent effort, “The Eagle” decimated Darrell Horcher en route to a second round TKO at UFC on FOX 19 this past April.
This win marked his first appearance inside the Octagon since defeating Dos Anjos in April 2014. Following this win a myriad of injuries, including two knee surgies and some broken ribs, forced Nurmagomedov to watch the 155-pound unfold from the sideline. The Dagestani holds notable wins over dos Anjos, Abel Trujillo, Gleison Tibau and Thiago Tavares.
UFC 207 will go down on December 30 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. No other bouts have been announced for the card. However a heavyweight rematch between former champions Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum has been linked to the event.
