'Cowboy' Cerrone next in line and will wait for title shot against Rafael dos Anjos
Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone would gladly fight every month if the UFC offered him fights on that kind of schedule, so it's no surprise that he was getting antsy just sitting and waiting for lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos to get healthy.
Cerrone secured his spot as the No. 1 contender to the lightweight title in May when he dismantled John Makdessi at UFC 187. Afterwards, he seemed resigned to sitting and waiting for dos Anjos to return from a knee injury that is likely to keep him out until at least December.
According to UFC sources via a report on UFC Tonight, Cerrone was already asking to fight again, but it appears he will be next in line for the title and the promotion has advised him to just take some time off for now and wait for the championship fight later this year.
If dos Anjos' rehabilitation goes according to plan, he will be ready to come back by December and the fight with Cerrone is the one that makes the most sense across the board.
Cerrone is currently riding an eight fight win streak and with Khabib Nurmagomedov on the shelf due to injury, there's no one standing in his way to get the next crack at the belt.
Cerrone also has the chance to avenge his last loss from 2013 when he fell by decision to dos Anjos.
For now, as much as Cerrone wants to fight, he's going to sit on the sidelines and wait for news that dos Anjos will be ready to go by December, and then the UFC can officially scheduled the next UFC lightweight title fight before the close of 2015.
