Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier official for UFC 178


Fresh off a win in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland, polarizing featherweight star Conor McGregor wanted a step up in competition and now he'll certainly get it as No. 6 ranked fighter Dustin Poirier has accepted a bout against him at UFC 178 in Las Vegas on September 27.
UFC officials announced the new bout on Tuesday.
McGregor (15-2) has looked virtually flawless through three UFC performances thus far finishing Diego Brandao and Marcus Brimage while also dominating Max Holloway over three rounds. The Irish fighter was forced to take a year off to rehabilitate his knee after having surgery, but he returned to form last weekend where he blasted through Brandao in less than one round.
The brash outspoken fighter has often lamented about being the best featherweight in the world and it was just a matter of time before he went through all the other contenders and now he'll get the chance to back that up facing one of the very best featherweights in the world.
Dustin Poirier (16-3) has been one of the top featherweights in the UFC for the past few years picking up wins over notable names such as Erik Koch, Jonathan Brookins and Josh Grispi.
The Lousiana native has looked better than ever lately since he started trainng full time at American Top Team in Florida and off of three wins in a row he will look to get back into title contention with a win over McGregor in September.
UFC 178 takes place on September 27 in Las Vegas with light heavyweight champion Jon Jones taking on Alexander Gustafsson in the main event.
